Christian Amoah and Richmond Osarfo have won the country’s first gold and silver medal in the Youth 85kg category at the ongoing International Weightlifting Commonwealth Championship in Malaysia. 

The competition saw the two Ghanaians grabbing a gold and a silver medal in the youth 85kg and 94kg category respectively.

According to the gold medalist he was self-motivated to make a strong challenge at the championship.

Amoah who was part of Team Ghana’s contingent at this year’s Rio Olympics is targeting a gold medal for Ghana at the 2020 Olympics and delighted at the feat and hopes to win more laurels for Ghana.

“I am very happy for winning Gold for Ghana and am very proud of myself, I targeted a medal for my country and I promised myself to win such a medal but either silver or gold and am happy that promise has come to pass.

“I always believe in myself and I know what I used to do at training so that gave me more confidence.

“I am going back home to prepare myself for the next Olympic games and my target for the Olympic games is to win more medals for Ghana," he said.

The Black Cranes had to raise funds from individuals to compete at the International Weightlifting Federation and the Commonwealth Championship in Malaysia Penang.

The team is appealing to all especially the government to invest in weightlifting at the 2020 Olympics.

Ghana was represented by three athletes of which the UK-based Forester Osei will compete on Friday at the senior event.

The Cranes will compete again at the African Championship which will be hosted by Egypt later in the year.
