PHDA Lauds Iduapriem Mines Contribution To Agric Sector

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has been awarded a certificate as the best corporate sponsor. At this year’s Municipal farmer’s day celebration organized at Bompieso by the Prestea Huni-Valley District, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Prestea Huni-Valley District Assembly, Mr. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, commended the Mine for demonstrating a high level of commitment towards agricultural development and women empowerment in the district. He however appealed to women to venture into agriculture and approach it as a business to help better their lives.

Receiving the certificate on behalf of the Mine, a Senior Community Development Officer of the Mine, Enoch Osei expressed appreciation on the certificate of recognition. “The  Initiative was instituted  in 2011 as part of efforts of the Mine to encourage more women venture into agriculture and  in complementing the efforts of government to promote the vocation  and since then more women from our host communities have left no stone unturned” he said

In the Tarkwa-Nsuaem District, the celebration was organized at Agona. Fifty year old Hajia Amidu from Boamah a community in Awhietieso near Tarkwa took home the award of the best female farmer. Having being in farming business for over fourteen years, she indicated that her hard work has yielded results and she was humbled with her award. Gleefully she said, “The award package will motivate me to work harder in producing food for my family and the nation at large”

Touching on the contributions of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine to the agriculture sector, the Municipal Agricultural Director for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Mr. Joseph Nii Tettey Otu adds that the support by Iduapriem Mine towards the municipal farmer’s day has been tremendous over the years and is optimistic more companies in the municipality will emulate the gesture Iduapriem is extending to the Municipal Agric Directorate and farmers.

“He is of the view that by supporting female farmers to ensure that the vocation becomes attractive it will directly create employment and there will be enough to feed on and sold at farm gates as well as the entire agriculture value chain business”.

The items the Mine donates to support the best female farmers for the  celebration upon request from the two Agric Directorates include packets of roofing sheets, orthopedic mattresses, sowing machines, shovels, two sets of 32” plasma color television, wax prints, pairs of wellington boots, four bags of fertilizers, machetes, spraying machines, sound systems, amongst others. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Agriculture, a business response to economic growth”.
