NPP Discovers Pre-Marked Ballots In Savelugu Constituency

Over the weekend, all political parties were given an opportunity to inspect the seals on the bags containing election materials for 31 constituencies in the Northern Region.

During the exercise, representatives of the New Patriotic Party also requested to inspect the content of the bags, including the ballot papers.

They discovered that Parliamentary ballot papers for Savelugu constituency arrived with the NDC candidates having his ballot column already marked which, on voting day, could have been confused with a thumbprint.

The consequence of this, if left unchecked, would have been that voters who cast their ballots for other candidates risked having their votes rejected.

The NPP representatives immediately objected to these ballot papers and the Electoral Commission convened a meeting with the political parties.

A similar objection was also raised against ballots for Wulensi. The EC subsequently took steps to return the ballots as rejected and for new ballot papers to be printed for the affected constituencies.

We commend our party agents for their vigilance. We also commend the EC for taking prompt action to rectify this serious breach.

We will also demand that all the rejected ballots returned to Accra should be destroyed in the presence of party agents.

We strongly condemn any attempt to manipulate the election materials and call on the appropriate authorities to investigate these acts immediately.

This incident demonstrates the need for continued vigilance among NPP agents. The leadership of the NPP is hereby calling on all party representatives and agents to take time to inspect all the ballot papers sent to the respective Regions, Districts, and Constituencies.

Eternal vigilance is what can help Ghana achieve a credible contest.
