Womens Nations Cup: Nigeria 1-1 Ghana: Black Queens Hold Super Falcons

Ghana’s Black Queens managed a 1-1 draw with Nigeria in their second Group game of the Africa Women’s Championship.

The Black Queens having gone into the game full of optimism after coming from a goal down to defeat Kenya 3-1 picked a point in a game which was described as the finals of the competition following the rivalry between the two sides.

Nigeria having started the game on a good note forced Ghana goalkeeper Nana Ama Asantewaa to pull out a save as early in the 3rd minute after Faith Ikidi had sent in a perfect free kick.

The Black Queens crawled their way back into the game to take control of the midfield with the likes of Elizabeth Addo, Priscilla Okyere and Juliet Acheampong stringing some good passes in midfield.

The seven-time African Champions (Nigeria) raced themselves into the lead after 21st minutes when Nana Ama Asantewaa failed to get her hands onto a cross by Faith Ikidi with the ball eventually coming off the back of Portia Boakye which fetched Nigeria the first goal.

Ghana showed resilience by pushing forward in search for the equalizer. Safia Abdul Rahman could have leveled the 36th when she received a nice through pass from Samira Suleman and dummied Nigeria defender Onome Ebi only for her final delivery to go wide.

The three-time finalist were awarded a penalty after a poor challenge from Nigeria defender Osinachi Ohale who had tried to take a first time clearance from the 18-yard box only for her to get a touch on the foot of Ghana skipper Elizabeth Addo.

Addo took the mantle on herself and expertly converted the kick to draw Ghana level.

The second half saw both teams having a fair share of possession as the game ended in a stalemate.

Ghana will now face Mali in the final Group game with Nigeria taking on Kenya in a fight for the top spot in Group B as both teams have 4 points after two matches.
