The Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Ghana@50 Secretariat, Dr. Charles Yves Wereko-Brobbey, believes the NPP lost the 2008 General Elections due to the manner the party elected its flagbearer. According to the former CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA), though there was a large pool of contestants, 17 potential candidates, the party could still have resolved whatever differences that cropped up before, during and after the congress. �In any party, definitely there would be factions but we need to accommodate democracy, otherwise if we bring Jesus or Mohammed, we will still lose in any direction,� he said. Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey was speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM�s �Kokrokoo�, on his latest ambition to become the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. Current National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, has already indicated that he will bow out when his term of office expires in December. This has opened the floodgates for many party bigwigs namely, Stephen Ntim, Sammy Crabbe, Felix Owusu Adjepong and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey to position themselves for the race. According to him, all the personalities who have made clear their intentions regarding the National Chairmanship position �are capable, but much will depend on the vision of each candidate.� Dr. Wereko-Brobbey, a founding member of the NPP who broke away from the party to form the United Ghana Movement (UGM), dismissed the assertion that he was not eligible to contest the NPP Chairmanship position. �I don�t think that (with) my wide experience I will be offering myself for a position if I didn�t believe that I am qualified to do the job�I�m qualified also as a member of the party,� he explained. The former UGM flagbearer believes majority of Ghanaians have lost faith in the ruling NDC and contended that �at the moment there is not a single Ghanaian who would want to vote for them (NDC), in the event of an election tomorrow� and called on the NPP to capitalize on this by uniting to wrestle power in 2012. Touching on reports of his not being qualified to hold an Executive position in the NPP, Tarzan, as he is commonly referred to, pointed out that he re-joined the party in July 2006, adding that his UGM party is even no more in the books of the Electoral Commission (EC). ��.Kwami, the UGM dead a long time ago�it is the responsibility of the EC to expunged it from their books�I wrote to the party in July 2006 and they accepted back into their fold,� he said.
