5% Increment In Fuel Prices Is Unjustified--CJA

Pressure Group, the Committee for Joint Action, (CJA) has lashed out at the President Mills administration calling for an immediate removal of the five percent increase on all petroleum products announced last Friday. The CJA claims the increment is economically unjustified. The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Friday, October 30, announced a five percent increase in all petroleum products across board. The increment, according to the NPA was necessitated by hikes in crude oil prices in the world market which currently hangs around $80 per barrel. With the increase, a litre of petrol now sells at GHp116.98, up from GHp111.41 while Premix fuel sells at GHp54.27 per litre, and diesel at GHp118.05, up from GHp112.06. But speaking in an interview with PEACEFM News, a member of the CJA, Edward Bawa, maintains the 5% increment in fuel prices is unjustified. Already, some commercial drivers have increased transportation fares although the Ghana Road and Transport Co-coordinating council has issued a directive to the contrary. According to Mr Bawa, these continuous increases had come about because the government and managers of the energy sector have failed "to think outside the box" to come out with more creative ways of managing the situation. Asked if the CJA will hit the streets to press home their demand for a reversal of the 5% increment, Mr. Bawa said, one of the means in which you can communicate to government is also through exactly what we have donewe know that obviously government will listen and realize that the points raised in our argument are validwe hope that government will pay heedbecause our points suggest the (basis) on which government decided to increase fuel prices are not justified.
