PPP Communicator, Nana Ofori Owusu has vehemently condemned the physical assault by an NPP vigilante group called Delta Force on the newly-appointed Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator.
The Regional Security Coordinator, George Agyei, on Friday was met with fierce indignation from the group who forced their way into his office and pulled him out for apparent political reasons.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Nana Ofori Owusu lamented about the country's constitution which he claimed is "sick".
According to him, the Delta Force exhibited sheer arrogance and insubordination because of the nation's law systems have become dysfunctional.
Nana Ofori Owusu wondered how foot soldiers of a party can wield power and authority to sack a Security Coordinator out of his office simply because they don't like him.
“Can you believe that foot soldiers think they have the power to help appoint the Security Coordinator of a Region? Kwami, this is one of the most dangerous statements I’ve ever heard in my life. That a person like me, I can say that I want to appoint this person as a Security Coordinator. Kwami, how can that be?” he asked.
He also decried the culture where politicians are allowed to make certain appointments and changes in the law enforcement agencies such as the Police Service.
He noted that such culture where when a government upon resuming power is given a mandate to appoint people into the security field whether their appointees qualify or not, would lead the country astray.
“Policeman is a politician. The Police are political. They’re doing partisan activities. Because, how come I will say this one is my person but that one is not. How can I come and do 50 transfers? This person is my crony and so must go and occupy such a post. How can you politicize an institution like the Police that’s supposed to protect us? That’s the place we run to when we have problems. That’s the place we seek refuge from thugs and hooligans.”
He believed the actions by the Delta Force prove that the "constitution that’s safeguarding us is sick. There’s a sickness – an illness, an ailment – in the constitution that is giving way for some of these things to happen. So, if we don’t deal with the root cause and continue to talk about symptoms. These are all symptoms…"
He called on the framers of the law to effect some "fundamental changes in our laws and the way we govern.”
