SEND Ghana sensitizes women on NHIS

SEND Ghana, a non-governmental organization is sensitizing women in the Upper West Region on how to access opportunities that are available to them and children in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). According to the group, the programme has arisen out of the realization that most rural dwellers especially women were still ignorant of the benefits of the NHIS and their roles and responsibilities in the operation of the scheme. At a workshop for women representatives from some communities in the region at Wa to kick-start the programme, Mr. Munkaila Adamu, a Programme officer of SEND Ghana, observed that most people did not know that a person could only access NHIS only after three months after registration. This guideline, he explained, has been designed to make sure that the scheme accrues enough funds for beginners to access free medical care adding;"This would ensure the sustainability of the scheme". Mr. Adamu said after the waiting period of three months if clients do not access their identity cards, temporary chits would be given to such persons who would need to access free medical care. He stated that the new ICT platform had made it possible and easy for ID card bearers to access health care across the country regardless of which scheme one registered with.
