Article: Help fight Corruption

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has made every effort to eliminate corruption in the country but to no avail. The government has taken measures, like the selection of students into senior high schools by the use of computer and collection of taxes from traders and market women which somehow has worked but has not gotten any impact on fighting corruption in the country. As a concerned citizen of the country, I think the government should make it mandatory to display fees and rates charges at government departments and agencies in order to fight corruption. I also suggest that the Ministries of Information, National Orientation and Public Sector Reforms should make it compulsory for fees and rates to be paid to be placed on notice boards. Such notice must be displayed boldly at vantage points in offices so that any one in need of such service of that sort could easily see and read the charges on the notice. In my opinion, the notice must be posted close to the officer in charge of providing that service. By so doing people going for any service can conveniently see, read and know the exact amount they are required to pay. Some governmental departments and agencies such as the CEPS, DVLA, Birth and Death Registry and the Immigration service should adapt the displaying of fees and charges for any transaction. I totally agree with the Assistant Commissioner of CEPS and Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Anne Anipa, who said they have taken some measures like giving out phone numbers to the public to call in to give information or report to their sector office, any officer found to be collecting bribes from the customers. I also suggest that the DVLA should display their fees charged for new and renewal of licence at the notice board of their premises so that if they go for services there, they pay the approved fee. I also suggest that the Birth and Death registry should also use this same method to help in fighting corruption in the country. Our immigration service which facilitate trade and business should also help in fighting corruption by assigning some of their officers to check all legal document if they are legitimate and also display the fees for acquisition of passport and the duration of delivery for customers or the public to be aware of the particular fees to be paid when transacting business with them. I think its high time the people of the country desist from the act of bribery and corruption so that, we have a country free of corruption.
