The report of some soldiers who were en route to perform a national assignment involved in a fatal accident which led to the death of one of them is very sad. According to the report, the military car carrying the soldiers who were on a national assignment was hit by a commercial vehicle at the Pong-Tamale on the Tamale-Bolga expressway in the Northern Region.
And to the bereaved family, we pray that our almighty Lord will grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss. May the soul of this brave soldier rest in peace!
Now to the subject at hand—road accidents—which often lead to untimely deaths of innocent people. Today is looking at the subject because of the period we find ourselves in.
Exactly two weeks from today, Christians across the globe will celebrate Christmas which marks the birth of Jesus Christ. And here in Ghana, unfortunately, we turn to record lots of fatal road accidents when it is nearing Christmas festivities.
Interesting, many of such road accidents during this period could be prevented if our drivers are careful. The underlying word here is careful. In fact there are some drivers who see this period as their ‘cocoa season,’ a situation which sees them engaging in unnecessary over-speeding just to drop passengers at their destinations and return for new set of passengers.
Sadly, this has been one of the major causes of accidents during days to the celebration of Christmas. This must stop. It is about time our drivers, especially the commercial ones, started thinking seriously about the safety of their passengers.
That, Today believes, is critical. Commercial drivers must know that once passengers board their cars they are obliged to drive them safely to their destinations.
Thus we are calling on all commercial drivers to drive with extra caution during these few weeks to Christmas celebrations. Certainly, all of us will want to celebrate an accident-free Christmas.
It is possible to achieve that if we particularly our drivers will watch the way they drive. That will definitely prevent some of these preventable fatal accidents.
It's about time that we are played our part in ensuring that we minimise road accidents to the barest minimum.
