Accra Stadium Renovation To Begin Next Month

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, has revealed that renovation works at the Accra Sports Stadium would begin early next month in preparation for next year’s Africa Women’s Championship (AWC) to be staged in Ghana.

Mr Asiamah said procument for the renovation works had been done and the only thing left was the commencement of the renovation which would give the stadium a facelift.

In a chat with the Graphic Sports yesterday, the Minister said the Ministry was committed to giving the stadium a new look in time since it would be a venue for the AWC slated for November 17 to December 1 next year..

“We have the procurement done for the renovation works at the Ministry and all what we have left is the commencement, which will give the stadium a facelift.

“As a ministry, we are committed to ensuring that we renovate the Accra Stadium in time to host the upcoming Africa Women’s Championship,” he said.

Some parts of the Accra Stadium were closed to the public by the National Sports Authority (NSA) after it was deemed a death trap by the Architecture and Engineering Services Limited (AESL).

According to the AESL, the commentary box, VIP and the VVIP boxes at the Accra Stadium are “death traps” with immense decay, necessitating an immediate closure to prevent an unforeseen tragedy after two different inspections by the body last year.
