Editorial: One Step Forward

The decision by the Ministry of Energy to consult a wide variety of organisations on how to develop the local content of the oil and gas industry is a step in the right direction. Those who have been invited to join the effort include the Trade Union, Political Parties, Youth and Students organisations, faith-based groups and gender focused organisations. The Insight is hopeful that all of these organisation will take the assignment seriously and help to maximize Ghanas interest in the oil and gas industry. The countrys experiences with mining must not be repeated in the oil and gas industry. Even though Ghana has enormous natural wealth, their exploitation has not benefited the people in any meaningful way. Available statistics show that Ghana gets less than five per cent of the total value of gold exports. We believe that it is possible to develop local content in a meaningful way if all of us will think together on how to maximize the national interests. The Ministry of Energy has take one bold step forward and we must support it.
