Ivorian President To Honour Satellites Today

Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo is expected to honour the victorious Black Satellites today in Abidjan in fulfillment of a promise he made earlier when the team won the World under-20 football tournament in Egypt. The players and their handlers, together with officials from both the FA and Ministry, are expected to leave Accra this morning for the ceremony, which is also to foster unity between Cote DIvoire and Ghana. President Gbagbo, while in Ghana on a visit, said that the victory by the team, the first from Africa to achieve the feat, was an Africa victory and needed to be recognised by all. The package is still under wraps but sources say it would be something tangible to be commensurate with the achievement. President John Evans Atta Mills has already honoured the players with a Toyota saloon car each plus a bond valued at GH10,000 each to mature in 10 to 15 years. A Presidential Black Satellites Committee set up to receive public donations also realised over GH300,000 which is to be distributed to the players later.
