We Are On The Road To Recovery Prez

President John Evans Atta Mills yesterday expressed delight at the progress his administration has made so far towards bettering the lot of Ghanaians, but acknowledged that there was more room for improvement. I am very happy with the successes we have chalked so far in one year, he told Editors during a media encounter at the Castle in Accra to mark his first anniversary in office. With the gains in various sectors of the economy, such as the reduction in budget deficit and inflation, he said, we are on the road to economic recovery. He said although there were challenges in the beginning of the year, when his administration took over, the government managed to put in place measures to stabilize the economy and revamp the agriculture and education sectors. Fielding questions on a wide range of issues from the journalists, he said the government was determined to build on the gains in its remaining term of office. We are not sleeping on our oars, he said, adding that our objective is to ensure that the totality of our efforts lead to the betterment of our people. Asked how he would rate the performance of his administration, he said Ghanaians were the best judges to assess their one-year performance, saying a student cannot rate himself. Asked why he rated his performance in his first 100 days in office, he jokingly said he was then a student and a teacher at the same time. On whether he had any regrets and challenges in his first year, he said the only regret was that his administration was still paying huge debts left by the previous government with resources that should have used by the present government to implement development projects. But this is not an excuse. It is an explanation, he added, and promised that we will do our best to improve the situation. He thanked Ghanaians for the support and cooperation, and gave the assurance that the government was committed to the Better-Ghana agenda. He also commended the media for its contributions to national growth, and assured them of more cooperation from government.
