DTT Saga...Sefa Kayi Resolves Impasse; Gov’t Meets GIBA On Thursday

Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has agreed to meet the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) on Thursday to deliberate on the StarTimes Satellite TV project.

GIBA has earlier objected the new agreement between the government of Ghana and StarTimes dubbed Access to Satellite TV for 300 Villages in Ghana which will benefit 6,000 households.

According to the association, the deal will be conflicting with a roadmap for Ghana’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) migration.

They have vented their frustration over the past days but Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is reported to have said the group “cannot sit and dictate for us [Government]”.

Describing their concerns as alarmist, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful emphasised her unwillingness to engage GIBA articulating that the government was elected with a mandate and that doesn’t include kowtowing to the demands of GIBA.

Speaking on PEACE FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful willingly accepted a meeting with GIBA on Thursday, September 28, to deliberate on the issue after a plea from host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

I am doing this for you [Kwami Sefa Kayi]. Thursday 2pm we’ll meet and discuss this issue,” she said.
