Follow Appropriate Procedure In Inviting MPs For Investigations, Speaker Tells Security Agencies

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Prof Michael Aaron Oquaye has asked the security agencies especially the Police CID to always follow the appropriate procedure in inviting a Member of Parliament for purposes of investigation, in order to avoid unnecessary tension.

The Speaker made the comment in Parliament today (Tuesday) in connection with the attempt by the Police to invite the MP for Asutifi South constituency, Hon Collins Dauda for investigations into his alleged obstruction of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in his constituency.

Rt. Hon Prof Michael Aaron Oquaye said whilst Members of Parliament are not above the law and privileges granted them by the constitution, they must be protected to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

He said officials of Parliament will accompany Hon Collins Dauda to the Director of CID of the Police Service in connection with the matter.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament earlier before the Speaker's comment, the Minority Leader, Hon Haruna Iddrisu described the invasion of the residence of Hon Collins Dauda as intimidating and an act of harassment .

He called for an end to such harassment of any Member of Parliament .

IGP Invites Collins Dauda

Inspector General of Police, David Asante Appeatu has invited Member of Parliament for Asutifi South constituency, Hon. Collins Dauda over recent violence that broke up in his constituency over the ongoing limited registration exercise and a National Peace Council meeting held over the weekend.

Some irate youth stormed the venue and beat up members of the council.

He will be assisting the police with ongoing investigations.
