Black Stars Beat Kotoko 3-0

The Black Stars on Friday thrashed Ghana Premier League side Asante Kotoko 3-0 in a friendly game played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Abdul Majeed Waris, Christian Atsu and Emmanuel Boateng were the goal scorers.

The match was put together to keep the senior national team busy after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) cancelled the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations back-to-back qualifiers with Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) had failed to meet a FIFA deadline to reinstate its old executives.

Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah began the game with Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan in post.

Turkey-based Isaac Sackey and Belgium-based Nana Opoku Ampomah also had a place in the starting line-up.

Bernard Mensah and Waris paired up-front.

The Porcupine Warriors, coached by former Black Stars captain Charles Akunnor, also fielded a strong side captained by Amos Frimpong.

The sides had to battle the rains to entertain the fans.

At the end of the day, the Stars won with happy moments shared among the players.

Coach Appiah expressed surprise at the performance of his former club.

“They played so well,” he said in the post-match press conference. “I wasn’t expecting them to play that well.”

“I really don’t know them but I was impressed.”

On his part, C.K Akunnor congratulated his charges for holding on especially in the second half when he tweaked his formation against the more experienced Stars.

“You’re playing Black Stars. They will possess more than you. They have experience more than you. So you can’t go and attack. . . .I didn’t want 10 goals [in my net].”

The Stars’ next major assignment will be against Ethiopia next month.
