CAF Confed Cup: Asante Kotoko Reach Play Offs After Beating Kariobangi Sharks

Asante Kotoko are through to the play-offs of the CAF Confederations Cup after beating Kenyan side Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in Kumasi. 

Striker Abdul Fatawu and captain Amos Frimpong scored the Porcupine Warriors as  Katila Omoto halved the deficit.

The Porcupine Warriors showed their intentions right from the blast of the whistle after skillful winger Maxwell Baako made his way through the Sharks defence only for his efforts to grace the post.

The Kenyans then provided their first threat of the game through forward Vincent Wasambo, who’s header from Michael Bodo flew inches away.

Striker Abdul Fatawu then broke the dead lock in the 17th minute after winning the ball off the feet of Kariobangi defender Geofrey Lemo to drive the ball past the goalkeeper.

Eight minutes later, the Reds were shocked after Katila Omoto equalized for the visitors with a thunderbolt from outside the penalty box.

Burkinabe forward Sogne Yacouba was brought down in the box with six minutes to end the half and captain Amos Frimpong perfectly executed from to double the lead.

Kariobangi Sharks returned from the beat with the first substitution after coach William Muluya brought on Sven Yidah for Henry Juma.

C.K Akunor responded with the introduction of Umar Bashiru in place of Jordan Opoku.

With 20 minutes left Emmanuel Gyamfi went round his marker Michael Bodo to piers into the Sharks penalty box, but his Yacouba Songne could not connect to his fine cross as the ball is cleared to safety.

Augustine Sefah fouled a Sharks player close to the box with the resultant freekick cleverly parried away by Felix Anna.

Kotoko held on in the final minutes as the game ended 2-1 with the Porcupine Warriors going through to the next stage of the competition.
