Ashanti NDC Chairman Commends Police, EC

Mr. Augustus Nana Akwasi Andrews, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has given high marks to the Police and the Electoral Commission (EC), for what he termed as their “remarkable professionalism” during his party’s presidential primary.

The peaceful, violent-free election was a feather in their cup and “an indication that when given the free space to operate, the police would prove equal to the task in the display of competence and professionalism”.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akyawkrom, in the Ejisu Municipality, he said the political parties, especially those in opposition, would never resort to the use of vigilante groups to monitor elections, when they were assured that the police could be trusted to do their job dispassionately and independently - without fear or favour.

He was impressed to have found all the delegates voting peacefully in a secured police presence, during a tour of designated voting centres in 34 out of the 47 constituencies in the region.

Mr. Andrews urged all stakeholders to rally support for the police to have the free space to operate without any influences and setbacks, as mandated by law, especially during elections.

He also praised the delegates of the party for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during the polls, especially, in the region, where there were expectations of violence due to the recent shooting incident the left one person dead and another critically injured at the party regional office.

He called for unity among the party members - to canvass support for former President John Dramani Mahama, who has been elected to lead the NDC to the 2020 general election.

He commended the six other candidates who joined the race for the party’s presidential ticket, for their display of political maturity.
