Vice President Mahama Speaks To ECOWAS MPs

The Vice President, Mr. John Dramani Mahama says a common currency for member states of ECOWAS would facilitate trade, Investments and Business within ECOWAS. To this end, the Veep says government is interested and committed to the proposal, to get ECOWAS countries to use a common currency. Mr. Mahama stated these when a delegation of ECOWAS parliamentarians paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle Osu. He said it is the wish of Ghana government that things are put right in La Cote dIvoire, Niger and Guinea, for elections to be conducted in those countries to ensure that democracy is entrenched out there. The Vice-President said the proposal by ECOWAS parliament to elect its members directly rather than appointing representatives of MPs of member countries is in the right direction. The Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, His Excellency Mahamane Ousmane who led the delegation said ECOWAS has made some restructuring in its community court of Justice and ECOWAS Parliament to be more effective. One of such reforms, Mr. Ousmane noted is the direct election of ECOWAS MPs, instead of appointing them. He said ECOWAS parliament is making efforts to get Cote dIvoire, Niger and Guinea to chart the course of democracy. The 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Prof. Mike Ocquaye and other Ghanas MPs accompanied the ECOWAS MPs to the Veeps place.
