Kwesi Appiah’s Selection Must Be Based On Merit – Francis Nii Afotey Mensah

Football Administrator and Chief Executive Officer for Rences Football Academy, a division two side, is of the view that Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah’s selection for AFCON 2019 must be based on merit.

“Ghana will need young players and experience to make the AFCON a reality if Black Stars really want to win the cup not because Sulley or KP Boateng is my friend or somebody’s friend,” the football administrator said.

“If Kwesi Appiah can’t stand his grounds to make selection to AFCON, then, why is he the coach of the national team? he quizzed.

Kwesi Appiah had always been insistent that he has a fair knowledge of the players he hopes to take to the AFCON tournament, but he is now at the crossroads, needing to decide whether to add experience to young players or now demands of people who may ultimately have a say in his future engagement with the national team or stand his ground and pick players he believes can win Ghana the title come the end of July.

The Black Stars coach’s original contract expired in April this year but has been given a temporary extension for the duration of the AFCON, after which a decision will be taken on whether to formally give him another 2-year extension or given the boot.

Earlier this year, Normalisation Committee Chairman, Kofi Amoah was emphatic in stating that Kwasi Appiah must win the 2019 AFCON or face the sack.

The Black Stars have not won the AFCON trophy in 37 years and still counting.
