Togo Appeal Over Nations Cup Ban Rejected

There is one last hope for the Togolese in front of CAS in August. Sport's highest court, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed an appeal by the Togo Football Federation to be included in the qualifying draw for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. The draw will take place on Saturday at Lubumbashi, Congo, for the 2012 tournament, with the finals being co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Togo will not be in the draw because CAF suspended them from the 2012 and 2014 African Cups, citing political interference. After gunmen attacked the Togo team bus and killed two officials en route to last month's tournament in Angola, the team agreed to stay and play but the Togo government ordered the players home. CAS ruled: "There is no risk of irreparable harm" by Togo being excluded from Saturday's draw. It added in a statement that should Togo win an appeal to CAS against the CAF's suspension - that hearing should be in August - then there will be time for Togo to be included in a new draw before qualifying starts in September.
