Editorial: What About The Over-Head Bridge?

Last week, there was a demolition of illegal structures at Achimota in Accra to rid the area of squatters. The exercise was also meant to rid the area of miscreants who had taken over the place and were committing all kinds of crime against decent citizens. Although, the exercise recorded some skirmishes, at the end of the day, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) succeeded in ridding the place of the misfits. However, there is another problem at the area that must be dealt with in earnest to help save lives. Presently, the Achimota over-head bridge has been turned into a parking lot for articulated trucks. These trucks have taken over the road such that motorists and pedestrians find it very difficult to use that portion of the highway. The trucks are parked without any sense of consideration for motorists and pedestrians at all. The situation becomes worse in the evenings, when trucks from Tema are parked in the area while the edges of the road serve as the sleeping places for the drivers and their mates. The police and the city authorities should take the bull by the horn and take a quick action before disaster strikes in the area. The drivers should be arrested and prosecuted because that part of the road is simply not for parking as it is being done.
