Editorial: A Total Flop!

On Thursday, President John Evans Atta Mills finally appeared before parliament to deliver his annual State of the Nation Address, the second since he assumed office on January 7, 2009. The document, which he eventually delivered over a period spanning a little over an hour, was only 24 pages in length with very large fonts, and contained very little to commend it! Indeed, at a time when many Ghanaians are despairing about their lives, the presentation made by the President in parliament on Thursday can only be described as despairingly disappointing. To begin with, the statement had little or nothing to commend it in terms of telling us the state of our nation. Going on, it again had little to commend it in terms of our future aspirations. Clearly, it is a document to which very little thought was applied both at the Presidency, and at sectoral level. In a word, it was a flop! For a long while, we at this newspaper have been insisting that Ghanaians sold themselves short by electing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party led by John Evans Atta Mills into power, and the fiasco we witnessed on Saturday is a direct indication of that! It is our hope that in the coming years, President Atta Mills and his team would apply themselves better in giving greater thought to the aspirations of Ghanaians before coming out with such documents, because we deserve better!
