Editorial: Meningits & The Vaccines

It has been reported that the vaccines needed to combat the Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) outbreak in the northern part of the country, W315, has arrived in Accra from the World Health Organization (WHO). Upon arrival, the vaccines were immediately airlifted to the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions for vaccination to begin. We at the Daily Searchlight would like to state that we are extremely relieved that finally the vaccines that would save the lives of our people in the northern parts of Ghana has arrived and is being distributed. That said, however, we are not pleased by the fact that this nation is so extremely dependent on an external international organisation in a matter that is uniquely Ghanaian. We wonder whether, if there had not been a WHO, this nation would have been able to combat the CSM on our own! It is our opinion that as a nation, we are far removed from being fully prepared to handled separate crisis affecting our nation, we are far removed from being fully prepared to handle separate crisis affecting our nation, like the CSM. Indeed, from the CSM case, it is clear that we are far from ready to combat all manner of disasters that could affect us! It is in this direction that we call on government to ensure that we make ourselves ready in all manner of ways for all manner of disasters, so that in future, when such things happen, we would not be waiting, cap in hand, for international organisations before we can act to save the lives of the people!
