Eminent Committee Has No Power Over EC - Abronye DC

The Bono Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC says the meeting between the Eminent Advisory Committee, the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) and Electoral Commission will have no effect on the Commission's decision to compile a new voters' register.

Abronye DC explained the role of the Eminent Advisory Committee is to advise and offer recommendation to the Electoral Commission but have no right to impose restrictions on them.

Contributing to UTV's "Adekye Nsroma" programme, he stated emphatically that no institution in Ghana can strictly order the EC to rescind its decision.

“It is important for Ghanaians to understand that the outcome of the Eminent Committee will not in any way affect the decision of the EC unless they (EC) decide to do so because the job of the Eminent Committee is to advice and offer recommendations to the EC and not to impose any restriction on them…The EC can only decide to apply their recommendations or reject it…also the article 45(a) of the 1992 constitution has given them (EC) the full mandate to operate their work without any restrictions from any political party or institution until there is changes in the 1992 constitution,” he said.

The Eminent Advisory Committee on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, called for calm to be restored among the parties following heated arguments about the EC's plan to compile a new voters' register ahead of 2020 elections.

The Committee, in a statement after a meeting with the EC, served notice to meet IPAC to iron out their concerns over the new register.

"At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that the Electoral Commission and the Eminent Advisory Committee will meet with members of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to have further deliberations on the matter,” the statement signed by Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Emile Short, read.
