Anyone Who Sits On The EC Chair Behaves In An 'Unusual Way' - Atik On New Voters' Register

"I don't know what is on the EC seat, it seems anyone who sits on it behave in an unusual way . . . " Atik Mohammed, a member of the People's National Convention (PNC) has said.

Some opposition political parties and Civil Society Organisations have criticized a decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voter's register.

These political parties think a new register is unnecessary and a waste of resources.

However, the EC disagrees.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Atik Mohammed wondered why the various EC heads often think their ways are always the best without considering other views.

Narrowing it down to the present circumstances, he says the EC should aim at building consensus with the political parties instead of taking a decision and expect everyone to accept it.

"The comments I have heard from the EC is not helping anything. I am advocating consensus building but their actions are counterproductive . . . Electoral Commission is supposed to be a referee . . . you sit with the political parties and based on discussions they take a decision, but you cannot take a decision and expect that the discussions that follows validate your decision. Their public utterances are not helping matters," he stated.
