Kufuor Expresses Shock At Drogba's CAF Award

Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kufour has expressed shock at CAFs decision to award the 2009 African Best Player award to Didier Drogba. The Ivorian beat off competition from strong favourite Samuel Eto Fills and Michael Essien according to the votes by heads of 43 national team coaches in Africa. The three short listed candidates played key roles in the various countries qualification to the 2010 World Cup. However, Eto Fills capped a wonderful season in Europe winning the Uefa champions league, Spanish league and the Kings Cup while Drogba could only win the English FA Cup with Chelsea. Speaking to Citi Sports, Samuel Osei Kufour said so far as 2009 is concerned, Samuel Eto deserved to win it because he won the champions league and even scored a goal in the final. The former Bayern Munich defender exclaimed come on! What else do you want from him? I was even thinking about Yaya Toure winning it because he won about six trophies in the season. Kufour who similarly lost the African award to Senegals EL Hadji Diouf in 2002 added that, I dont know if they (those who voted) were thinking about this season or what. Meanwhile the Confederation of African Football has revealed on its website that twenty one African national team coaches voted for Didier Drogba as the first on the list while eleven gave Eto the nod.
