Nasty Scenes At Nana Darkwa's Trial...NPP, NDC Supporters Pelt Each Other With Stones

Reports reaching Peacefmonline.com say two persons have been seriously injured and rushed to a hospital for medical attention, whiles several others have sustained various degrees of injuries following a clash between supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) outside the premises of the Cocoa Affairs Court this morning. This was after Judge B.K. Wilson again adjourned the case in which an NPP activist and radio commentator, Nana Darkwa is being tried for spreading false information to cause fear and alarm. Sources say shortly after the adjournment, fanatics of the two largest political parties began pelting each other with stones, as even the presence of security officers (police personnel) could not deter them from tearing at each others throat. Todays fracas comes on the heels of a similar incident where irate members of a group claiming to be supporters of the ruling NDC, nearly lynched the NPP radio commentator as he walked out of court. Trouble courting 27-year-old NPP activist, Nana Darkwa, was arrested and incarcerated on Thursday, February 18th, for passing unsubstantiated comments which imputed ill motive to former President Rawlings on the Accra-based radio station. He was charged with publishing information with the intention to cause fear or harm to the public or to disturb the public peace, under Section 208 of the Criminal code of 1960, and remanded into prison custody for 2 weeks by the Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra, but spent the night at the Police Ministries cells. But on Friday, 19th February, an Accra High Court granted him bail in the sum of GH 400 plus one surety. Although his arrest was highly criticized by some with the Minority in Parliament even boycotting proceedings to protest his detention, pressure group, the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), widely condemned his comments as irresponsible. The enraged supporters who had thronged the circuit court expressed their displeasure at the kingly treatment being given Nana Dankwa by the opposition NPP, with the Minority bearing the brunt of their anger.
