UEFA Release Statement on Champions League and Europa League Qualifying Rules If Seasons Are Terminated

The Football Association would be tasked with selecting clubs 'on sporting merit' to participate in next season's Champions League and Europa League if the Premier League season is cancelled.

The Uefa Executive Committee held a video conference on Thursday and released a lengthy statement that clarified that if a league is 'prematurely terminated for legitimate reasons in accordance with the above conditions, Uefa would require the National Association concerned to select clubs for the Uefa club competitions 2020/21 based on sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic competitions'.

Manchester City are second in the Premier League table but Uefa have banned them from European competitions in the next two seasons after they were found to be in breach of Financial Fair Play. City have lodged an appeal, which will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

United are fifth in the table and outside the Champions League qualifying places, but would ordinarily be given City's place in the Champions League, pending the CAS appeal.
