Observe Social Distancing Protocols and Organize Primaries - Dr. Amoako Tuffour Tells NPP NEC

A member of the Council of Elders of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Amoako Tuffour has proposed to the National Executive Council of the party to observe social distancing protocols and organize their parliamentary primaries.

He says a decision to impose candidates on delegates will only spell doom for the party.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ program, he explained that the party has rules and regulations and that they cannot forego it during this COVID-19 period.

According to him it is unfortunate that COVID-19 has derailed the party’s parliamentary and presidential primaries but it’s only proper that the party structure is followed in their bid to elect parliamentary candidates for the party.

He added that the party is a peace-loving party and that executives of the party should not do anything that will undermine the peaceful processes it enjoys during their parliamentary primaries.

Suspension of Primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its parliamentary primaries which was originally scheduled for April 25, 2020, to elect parliamentary candidates in constituencies where the party has sitting Members of Parliament ahead of the 2020 General Elections.

The decision to suspend the primaries was taken a National Steering Committee meeting held on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, due to the ban on social gatherings as part of national efforts towards the containment of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The National Steering Committee, by reason of Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution, is the body responsible for overseeing the daily management of the party, and thus, mandated to ‘act on behalf of the party on urgent matters’ such as in the circumstances we find ourselves as a party and nation owing to the Covid-19 pandemic,” this was contained in a release by the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu.
