Registration Exercise: Mobile Teams On Standby To Assist Overcrowded Centres - Dr Bossman Asare

Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of operations, Dr Bossman Asare has indicated that arrangements have been put in place for the aged, pregnant women, lactating mothers and the physically challenged for the voters' registration exercise.

According to him, additional centres have been provided at the district offices of the Electoral Commission (EC) to attend to the aged, lactating mothers, pregnant women and physically challenged people who will not be able to join the queue for the registration which starts tomorrow Tuesday, 30th June, 2020.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Dr Bossman Asare asked the categorised people to go to the various district offices with information about their area of residence and the areas they want to vote in order to help in the registration as the district offices are not polling stations for elections.

“We have put measures in place so that in our various district offices, there will be additional registration centres to cater for the aged, pregnant women, lactating mothers and the physically challenged persons,” he said.

“These centres are not polling stations and so those categorised people should provide their area of residence and polling centres they want to vote and this will help the EC officials at the district offices to register the people who have been earmarked for the additional registration centres,” he stressed.

He however assured Ghanaians that the Electoral Commission (EC) is fully prepared for the new voters' registration exercise as protocols have been put in place to ensure the safety of every Ghanaian who will be going out for registration exercise.

He reiterated that as part of the protocols, the Electoral Commission (EC) will create some lines to indicate one-meter distance for the registrants to comply with in the queue as they await their turn to register for the new voters' ID.

“In every registration centre, we have created some lines to indicate one-meter distance for the registrants to comply with in the queue for the registration. We have veronica buckets available at every centre for people to wash their hands. This protocol has been arranged and our officials are wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in order to protect our officials and everyone else who will be at the centres for the registration,” he said.

As part of the Electoral Commission’s (EC’s) preparedness to address overcrowded issues at the registration centres, Dr Bossman Asare mentioned that the Commission has a mobile team to move to centres with overcrowded issues and assist in the registration.

“We have mobile teams on standby to assist any centre that we will have overcrowded registrants at the centres. We will deploy someone to the said centre to set up a machine to assist in the registration so that a lot of people in the queue can be attended to. This will help us to stick to the stipulated 6 days period for the registration as our machine can register 100 people in a day,” he mentioned.

“I want to assure Ghanaians that every Ghanaian will be attended to as we have 6 days to register every eligible Ghanaian voter. If you go today and you are not able to register, you can go back the next day to register and the voters' ID Cards will be given instantly after registration,” he assured.
