COVID-19: Dexamethasone Will Do You More Harm Than Good If . . . - Senior Pharmacist Warns

Member of the COVID-19 management team at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge, Pharm. Jennifer Boateng Kumah has advised that people should desist from buying their own dexamethasone drug since it is dangerous to be used without supervision.

Dexamethasone is a COVID-19 drug given to patients in serious conditions with intense supervision by health personnel because it comes with a lot of complications after one has taken it.

According to the senior pharmacist at Ridge hospital, a specific medical cure for COVID-19 has not yet been found, as dexamethasone is just a temporal medication to manage patients whose condition with respect to the disease is critical in the hospital.

However, she advised that it will not be the best for a person to take the medicine claiming to prevent themselves from the disease or building their immune system to prevent any infection.

"Anyone who will on his/her own acquire and drink the medicine will cause more harm to his/her body than thinking he/she benefiting from it," he advised.

Speaking on UTV's 'Adekye Nsroma' health segment, Pharm. Boateng Kumah categorically stated that "dexamethasone used to manage a COVID-19 patient can raise the sugar level of the patient in question and again result in distribution of facts in the user's system".

However, she advised that citizens should eat more vegetables and fruits, drink more water, reduce stress and rest the body to prevent one's immune system from being affected with the disease.
