Spio Meets Rawlings

Leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, arrived in the country yesterday from his base in the United Kingdom to begin what his aides describe as an intensive campaign for the flagbearership position of the party. This comes days after he resigned his position as one of the several Vice Chairmen of the NDC and sent a group of persons to pick nomination forms on his behalf from the partys office to enable him to contest the position. Spokesman for his campaign team, Alhaji Mohammed Nasiru yesterday told DAILY GUIDE that he would be meeting founder of the NDC, former President Rawlings today at his Ridge office to formerly inform him of his decision to run for the flagbearership position and also ask for his blessings. Spio is contesting with incumbent President John Evans Atta Mills and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings who have both picked nomination forms. His spokesman has however rubbished media reports which suggest that Spio would eventually rescind his decision and throw his weight behind Nana Konadu. I can tell you for a fact that the kind of force, the kind of enthusiasm, that kind of adrenalin that Spio-Garbrah intends to start his campaign among the rank and file of the NDC will make Atta Mills step, he said. He is expected to spend much of his time in the country, campaigning with the conviction of leading the NDC into the 2012 elections. Spio is said to have begun the processes for his resignation from the CTO as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). By September 2011, Nasiru said Spio would cease being the CEO of the organisation. Spios decision to contest the position goes to further increase the tempo of the already-charged campaign being embarked upon by the Konadu and Mills camps. He is however expected to formerly launch his campaign in the next couple of days to get ready for the congress.
