Calling For Closure Of Schools Due To Covid-19 Should Be Based On Scientific Evidence – Child Rights International

Child Rights International (CRI) wading into the ongoing saga involving some students contracting the deadly new coronavirus says closing down schools due to fears of Covid-19 should be based on scientific evidence.

The concerns of Child Rights International (CRI) comes after parents, and the teacher’s Associations in one accord has called on the Akufo-Addo government to close down schools due to the rate at which students are contracting the virus at school.

However, the CRI Executive Director, Bright Appiah in a statement last Wednesday July 15, 2020 indicated that a rush decision will be imprudent since government cannot prove whether children got infected from home or contracted the disease whilst at school.

The Child Rights International, however, has suggested that the Ghana Health Service in their daily data must provide a report on the behaviour of Covid-19 among children at various schools.

Buttressing his point, Mr Appiah will “assist to understand the pattern of Covid-19 among the children as to inform policy direction and also know how serious the consequences are on children.”

In the interim, the Child Rights International (CRI) Executive Director urged the Ghana Education Service to enhance security and protection services at schools that have recorded cases to ensure the adherence to the safety protocols.
