Hawa Koomson Has Embarrassed Parliament - Ras Mubarak

Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu constituency, Ras Mubarak has said he is embarrassed by the action of his colleague MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson for firing a gun on Monday at the Step to Christ polling centre in Kasoa, her constituency.

According to Ras Mubarak there is a clear pattern in the way the ruling NPP is desperate to hang on to power looking at how they are doing things.

He said such an action is partly ensuring that they scare away voters from registering.

"As a Member of Parliament, I am very embarrassed that a colleague at a polling station will brandish and fire a gun and actually come back and admit to firing it. Somebody could be hurt or killed. I don’t think what was happening at the polling station warranted the Minister exhibiting the kind of lifestyle she exhibited. And clearly we are seeing a pattern in the way that the ruling NPP is desperate . . . ensuring that they scare away voters from registering," he said.

Parliament must redeeem 'bad' name

According to Ras Mubarak, "Parliament would have to seize the moment, rise to the occasion and act while the sun is still up and haul her (Hawa Koomson) before the privileges committee".

"She has brought the name of parliament into disrepute. She has embarrassed not just herself but every Member of Parliament."

"Parliament has a unique opportunity to redeem its image; don’t forget parliament has been at the back of public jokes and a lot of criticism . . . what happened cannot be one of those things that are swept under the carpet," Member of Parliament for Kumbungu constituency said in reaction to Hawa Koomson's 'Rambo-style' action.
