COVID-19: Over 200, 000 Seafarers Trapped On Ships - GMA Says

The Director-General of Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr.Thomas K. Alonsi has disclosed that over 200, 000 seafarers are stranded on ships due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

According to him, the 200,000 seafarers are waiting to be repatriated globally due to the worldwide travel restrictions imposed on countries as a measure to curb down the spread of the COVID-19.

He said, majority of these stranded seafarers have exceeded the stipulated twelve months maximum at sea as adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) - this is a result of broader closure and visa requirements which have made crew changes impossible.

He commended President Nana Akufo-Addo for the foresight in understanding the plight of these frontline workers who have instrumental in the fight against Coronavirus.

Mr. Thomas k. Alonsi made this remark when Nautical Institute presented a citation to the organization in recognition of its role in facilitating the repatriation of stranded seafarers in Ghana.
