COVID-19: Prez Akufo-Addo Is Giving Ghanaians “Safety Nets”, Not Freebies - Gideon Boako

Dr Gideon Boako, Spokesperson for the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not giving ''freebies'' to Ghanaians as some people want to call it.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his 15th COVID-19 update on Sunday, August 16, 2020, announced that the final year students about to write their BECE will each receive a hot meal each day.

Earlier during one his regular updates, the President also directed that water and electricity supply be made free and accessible for all Ghanaians as part of measures to alleviate the hardships confronting the citizenry during the pandemic.

The President's interventions have been described as ''freebies'' and also met with strong political opposition.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's ''Kokrokoo'', Dr. Gideon Boako stated that what the President is giving out to Ghanaians are rather ''safety nets''.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo cares about Ghanaians and therefore would do everything possible to alleviate their plight and improve their living conditions.

“President is not giving freebies but rather they're safety nets. It's important that any President or government who cares about the citizenry will do this in a situation as this; these are not normal times. We're doing what we can to help alleviate the plight of people. It also proves that Ghanaians have a leader who cares about them and will do everything to improve their living conditions.''

He, however, cautioned Ghanaians not to be complacent because the country is recorded low coronavirus active cases.

Although good news, Dr. Boako advised the citizenry to continue to adhere to the safety protocols to curb the disease.

''Coronavirus has tested our governance system. It has also tested the prepardness of the country to resolve situations like this pandemic...Everybody is at risk. Those who have not contracted the disease and those who recovered can still get infected. So, we need to practice the safety protocols; self-protection is very important,” he said.
