'NPP Manifesto Capsules’ – Unemployment Insurance Scheme & Agenda 111 (Ghana Cares)

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed global economies for want of preparedness to contain contagious diseases and the lapses within the health institutions. Ghana by no means is not an exception to this fate that has raged many homes and economies.

Thankfully, Ghana’s success in waging and winning the war against Covid-19 has been incredibly iconic and greeted with many global commendations. The situation is currently under control in Ghana as compared to other mighty nations of the world who are still feeling the scourge of the pandemic which is culminating into an imminent second wave. It is gratifying to note that many of the decisions that were taken by the Akufo-Addo government months ago to contain the pandemic are now being gradually manifested by these nations.

It is thus appropriate to suggest that at this epoch of our history, what Ghana needs is a ‘strategic and situational leadership’ that can offer impetus in dealing with the many dire situations and needs of our modern-day country - crucial to this, is our resolve not to gamble with our manifest destiny but remain firm in faith and deliver our nation once again into the tried-and-true hands of President Akufo-Addo to usher us into the next phase of our nation's agenda for progress.

In the light of these developments, President Akufo-Addo has registered his desire to initiate the “UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE SCHEME” which will provide temporary income support for workers who are laid off as a result of the pandemic. This means that our brothers and sisters who are teachers, artisans, traders etc. and are generally affected by the pandemic will not have to worry about where their next meal will be coming from. Just as the President delivered on many of such interventions like the free water supply, free electricity, tax cuts, soft loans to small enterprises etc, same drive will be canvassed to this scheme under the next phase which is dubbed as the “Stabilization Phase” of the Ghana Covid Alleviation and Revitalization of Enterprises (GHANA CARES) programme.

The Akufo-Addo government will also begin the “AGENDA 111” under the “Stabilization Phase”. This will witness the construction of a 100-bed hospitals in the 101 districts which currently lacks such facilities. Also, regional hospitals will be created in all the newly created regions together with a new western regional hospital, the building of two (2) psychiatric hospitals as well as the rehabilitation of existing ones and the creation of an infectious disease centres in the coastal, middle and northern belts of Ghana. All these edifices will come with modern accommodations to house our healthcare professionals. The Ghana Centre for Disease Control shall further be established.

The illuminating presence of the President Akufo-Addo's government on every facet of our socio-economic life should not be derailed by changing this government in the next election. It begs the question, who changes a performer for a non-performer? It has thus become a ‘civic-necessity’ to do right to this country by maintaining this government for the next four years in order to do more for its people.
