NDC Youth Attack Tamale Office

A youth group calling itself the Action Youth Group on Monday morning attacked the offices of the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, destroying properties in the process. The group says it carried out the action in protest against the demolition of unauthorized structures around the Tamale Sports Stadium. The group claims the demolition which was ordered by the MCE, Alhaji Haruna Friday is making the ruling NDC unpopular in the city. Joy News Northern Regional correspondent Mahama Shaibu spoke to one of the protesters who explained that their action against the MCE was borne out of the fact that he failed to heed to party leaders who had earlier advised him to put a stop to the demolishing exercise. He said the youth hope to demand an explanation from the MCE but were told is in Accra when they got to the office. They therefore sent a strong warning to the MCE asking him to discontinue the exercise or face the wrath of the youth in the area. After the destruction, the youth headed to the office of the Northern Regional Minister, Moses Mabengba. But the minister declined to meet with them, describing their action as "appalling". "If we are in a political arena and you are youth of a political party and you think this is the way to go then please you are running your party into opposition. Any civilized society will not have people behaving this way and think that people will continue to follow that party, the minister said.
