Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has urged Ghanaians to pay their taxes to enable government complete its projects.

He said the non-payment of taxes makes the completion of Government of Ghana (GOG) projects difficult.

He was speaking to government's Agenda 111 initiative, which is aimed at building 111 district hospitals across the country.

The initiative which will commence on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, will include two specialized hospitals.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who doubles as the Member of Parliament(MP) for Ofoase Ayirebi constituency said completing all the projects will require a collective effort which includes the payment of taxes.

According to him, Ghanaians cannot avoid taxes and expect the government to be able to construct roads or other projects in their regions.

"We need to be truthful to ourselves; it cannot be that all these economic activities are ongoing yet taxes are not being paid; it’s not possible. According to the GRA data, 30,000 professionals, including lawyers, doctors, accountants, engineers, don’t pay tax and they are now being chased to collect the taxes. If this nation will move forward we need to be truthful to ourselves and pay our taxes," he indicated.

He further stated that "government is committed (to complete the agenda 111) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is also taking steps to ensure taxes are being paid".

"It’s a collective effort," he added.

About Agenda 111

Agenda 111 was announced by President Akufo-Addo in April last year.

It includes 101 district hospitals, six regional hospitals in the newly created regions, two specialized hospitals in the middle and northern belts, as well as a regional hospital in the Western Region and renovation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

The objective of the Project is to significantly deepen the delivery of quality healthcare at the district level, boost access to healthcare services for all citizens towards ensuring the attainment of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal Three.
