Rap artiste, Opanka, has explained why there seems to be a growing number of singers than rappers in the Ghanaian music industry.

He explained to eTV Ghana’s Foster Romanus on the Late Nite Celebrity Show that singing is a more commercial aspect of music as compared to rap, hence it is more lucrative to do music as a singer than as a rapper.

“If you’re into rap, the truth is real music lovers appreciate your music but it can’t be played at clubs for people to dance with it so when we hear the commercial songs which is more of singing being played, then it looks like those people are rather working more”, he said.

Opanka continued that, “That is what people use to compare so as a musician looking to make money from your craft, you will also divert to singing so that you’ll be counted among those people. When you do rap, people will love it and applaud you for it but applause doesn’t bring money’.

According to him, when you do rap, you are partly sidelined because even though you have the fans, you will not be making the money as your songs are not being used commercially. “When people divert from rap to singing, they do it to build their brand and make money so after they’ve gotten the fame and money, then they switch back to their rap”, he explained.

He concluded that basically, the masses are more into commercial songs, hence, to make gains out of their music, artistes are being forced to switch or at least add singing to their musical compositions.
