A Private Legal Practitioner and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has debunked claims by the government communication machinery that the benevolence of some Western nations with respect to Covid-19 vaccines are as a result of the many travels of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to him, he has seen many posts of the government spokespersons attributing the country’s share of the 70 million doses of the vaccine gifted to developing countries as a result of President Akufo-Addo’s recent travel to Germany.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, the private legal practitioner posited that the assertions of the government’s “spin doctors and propagandists” cannot be true as the German government had already promised 70 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to the developing countries before President Akufo-Addo travelled to Germany.
“In recent travels of the President, I saw a post by some of the government spokespersons that when the President travelled, he came with the Covid-19 vaccines. Can you imagine that the government of Germany had already promised 70 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines to the developing countries . . .” he debunked.
“It is not because of the Private Jet that the President chartered that influenced the Covid-19 vaccines. In fact, other Presidents of developing countries who didn’t travel to Germany are entitled to the Covid-19 vaccines, and so let no one throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians that it was President Akufo-Addo’s travel to Germany that influenced the Covid-19 Vaccines,” he reiterated.
He insisted that the defence put up by the government communication machinery, suggesting that the country has benefited from it as against the cost on the taxpayers over the President’s travel is falsehood.
“That particular analysis is a non-starter, because before the recent travel to Germany, the German government had already promised to give developing countries 70 million dosages of the Covid-19 vaccine and so it has nothing to do with President Akufo-Addo’s travel,” he debunked.
Germany to give Ghana 1.5 million AstraZeneca vaccines – Presidency
The government will receive 1.5 million vaccines out of the 70 million doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines granted to Africa by the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.
At a media briefing at the Jubilee House, last Monday, Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin said the gesture resulted from President Akufo-Addo’s bilateral discussion with his German counterpart during his recent visit to Germany.
According to him, having received confirmation in this regard, President Akufo-Addo is making arrangements to take delivery of the vaccines.
“The German Chancellor made it known to the President that a total of 1.2 million vaccines, were to be given to Ghana but a few hours ago, I got confirmation from the President, that this has increased from 1.2 million to 1.5 million.”
This comes days after Germany promised to make up to 70 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines available to African countries this year.
