2022 Budget: Let’s Rescue The Situation - Majority Leader Tells Minority Ahead Of Heated Debate Tuesday

Another unprecedented move to be made or a consensus to be reached??? These are some lingering questions as the Majority Caucus in Parliament will be 'locking horns' again with the minority over the 2022 Agyenkwa budget.

One might say this 8th Parliament never ceases in giving unprecedented moves which include the election of a Speaker belonging to the Minority. A recent 'unprecedented' is when the Majority side in Parliament staged a walkout during the debate to approve the 2022 budget. In Ghana, the norm is for the Minority to walk out but this current Parliament seems poised in writing its own history.

Rescue Mission

On Tuesday, 30th November 2021, the MPs will meet again for another debate.

Even though it is expected to be a fired-up debate, Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is hoping that the Majority and the Minority will reach a consensus and find a lasting way forward.

In an interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', the Majority leader said there's the need for both sides to "rescue the situation".

"We need to play together as leaders of the House to define a way that will save the integrity of the House and bring rescue without attacking anybody. We can rescue the situation"

Unconstitutional and Invalid

It may be recalled that the Minority through a voice vote rejected the 2022 budget on Friday; a move, the majority has described as null and void.

Speaking to this, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who had already described the rejection as a "nullity" told Kwami Sefa Kayi that the budget constitutionally has not been rejected and for the Minority to claim it has is "unconstitutional and invalid"

"The motion is still pending because the number required to pronounce a yes or no was not existent on Friday" he added.
