Gov't Alone Can't Solve Unemployment In Ghana - Sammi Awuku

The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku has charged government to support institutions and businesses employing the youth with or without skills in order to help resolve the unemployment situation in Ghana.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Peace FM's morning show, the NLA Director-General noted that government alone cannot shoulder the burden of creating jobs for the large number of youth seeking employment.

He commended the entrepreneurs giving opportunities to the youth but believed they need government assistance to ably achieve their employment goals.

''Government alone cannot solve it. In sub-saharan Africa, the biggest problem now is the youth bulge. The youth are many...You have 400000 people entering the job market every year. Only 10% get employment after the first year; the 90 percent, it takes them 9-10 years'', he said.

He added; ''Today, when a young man/woman goes to seek job, they are asked whether they have three years working experience. They don't have it, so in effect, that is a major stumbling block before we determine their fate. So, the companies and the institutions that employ these fresh hands, I think when they also make this appeal to government; government can also factor them into their plans and when they are given those tax rebates and incentives, it will help them to also encourage and hire more hands.''
