IMF Bailout: NPP Got It All Wrong From The Beginning - NDC MP

A member of the NDC Finance Committee in Parliament, Richard Acheampong, has suggested that government must present economic intellectuals to meet with the Assessment team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to him, he will be surprised if the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is included in Ghana’s team for the meeting.

He described Mr. Ofori-Atta as a ‘clueless’ Minister.

“He could not even explain himself well to us in parliament,” he claimed.

The government announced on Friday, July 1, 2022, that it had decided to engage the IMF on a balance of payment support because of the global economic meltdown necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Those crises have resulted in high inflation, fuel price hikes, and depreciation of the local currency and eroded the country's foreign reserves and buffers.

Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', Richard Acheampong said the Akufo-Addo-led government's mismanagement has led to the current situation.

He explained that the government introduced some 'fantastic' policies like the Free SHS program but it 'collapsed' along the line due to bad management.

“They didn’t have a blueprint for such a fantastic policy,” he lamented.

Adding that, “they got it all wrong from the beginning”.

Richard Acheampong further advised that, "the team that will meet with the IMF must have good policies for the country.”
