Decision To Deport Aisha Huang To China Was Problematic From Get-go - Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed says he is flummoxed by the story of the Chinese national and galamsey kingpin, Aisha Huang who was deported about four years ago from Ghana for illegal mining offences but has subsequently found her way back into the country to continue her illegal activities.

Aisha Huang was deported from Ghana in December 2018 for illegal mining offences but, in January 2022, she re-entered Ghana under a new identity.

She is said to have acquired a new passport and used the Togo border to gain entry into the country.

Aisha Huang had also reportedly acquired a Ghana Card (non-citizen) with the name, Huang En, and returned to her illegal mining activities in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

She was arrested with other accomplices at Ahodwo in Kumasi and on Monday, September 5, 2022, the Accra Circuit Court 9 presided by Samuel Bright Acquah remanded her into Police custody.

Touching on the matter during 'Kokrokoo' panel discussion programme on Peace FM, Atik Mohammed stated that the decision to deport Aisha Huang when she was first arrested was wrong from the start.

According to him, he till date doesn't understand the logic for the Attorney-General's decision to discontinue prosecution of the galamsey queen in 2018 and what he may term as flimsy excuse that her prosecution would badly affect Ghana's economy, hence expatriating her to China instead of her serving a jail term in prison in Ghana.

"The very decision to deport, in my view, is problematic. It was wrong from the get-go. She should be tried and if found guilty, sent to our medium security prison but we allowed her to go," he said.

He, however, charged the A-G not to treat Aisha Huang with kid gloves now that she has been re-arrested.
