Support For Mills Earns NDC Chairman Death Threats

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, has confirmed to Peace FM News that he has indeed received death threats from some faceless individuals. According to him, the death threats began just a couple of days to the commemoration of the June 4th Uprising in Kumasi. Recounting the incident on Peace FM during the stations Midday bulletin, Mr. Obimpeh revealed that he received the first death threat via phone from an unknown individual on Thursday, June 2nd at about 5pm, warning him of his (Obimpehs) death before the July 8 Delegates Congress. When he tried to find out the identity of the caller, he (caller) hanged up on him. The Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman further disclosed that subsequent threats he received on his life, were in the form of text messages threatening him with death for having the temerity to insult former President Rawlings. It all started some few days to the June 4 commemoration; I received a phone call from an unknown number on Thursday evening threatening me to get ready because they are going to kill me for insulting former President Rawlings. Afterwards, I started receiving threatening text messagesafter the commemoration of June 4thtelling me my movements are being monitored and that Ill be eliminated before the July 8 congress if I dont renounce my support for President MillsI received another text message on Sunday when I was at the party office so I summoned the Regional Youth Organiser, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Propaganda Secretary to inform them about the text message and I was advised to report to the police; which I did, he narrated. According to the Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman, the faceless people accused him of feigning sickness any time the founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings paid a visit to the region, a claim he says is pure balderdash. Though he admits not being personally available to welcome the ex-president on the two occasions he visited the Ashanti region, he maintains that on both occasions he was indeed not in the best of health. He, however, stated that he is not perturbed by the threats nor will it induce him to renounce his support for Professor Mills in any way, adding that it has rather re-ignited his passion for the president. it will be better for me to die whiles Mills is in power so he can bury me than to do under the presidency of someone else, he said. Meanwhile, the Ashanti Region Police have begun investigations into the matter.
