Lay Off 'Unnecessary' Government Appointees Instead of Cutting Salaries by 30% - Economist

An Economist at the Garden City University College, Dr. Francis Tandoh, has said that a major boost to help stabilise the Ghanaian Economy is to lay off the unnecessary staff at the various government institutions instead of cutting Appointees salaries by 30% as announced by President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking with Peace FM's News reporter, Gifty Akoto, he explained that serious and proactive measures must be included in the 2023 budget to help shore up revenue for the government which is currently in a bad state.

He said government would need innovative revenue measures to stabilize the current unstable economy.

According to him, if the Government is ready to change the hardship in the country, they should lay off some Ministers with their deputies instead of deciding to just cut off their salaries by 30% which he says is unnecessary and not helpful.

He further explained that some Ministries such as the Education, Finance and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice have huge responsibilities as such deserve deputies, but a Ministry like the Gender and Social Protection already has a Chief Director so there will be no need for a deputy.

Dr. Francis Tandoh again suggested that the Ministry of Information and Communications have much in common and will advise that they should be merged to help cut down cost.
