Kumawood actor, Komfo Kolaege has stated that Ghanaians were unfair to late Christian Atsu during his playing days with the Black Stars when he was attacked for what he described as “little failings”.

In a Facebook yesterday, February 19, to offer condolences to the family of the deceased and Ghanaians at large, Komfo Kolaege said the death of Christian Atsu hit him badly having lost close family members recently.

“Hmmmm I’m speechless. Having myself lost close family members in different settings I feel so sad about this news. He was at some point in time the best player in the Black Stars and Afcon. With little failing Ghanaians forgot all he did and attacked him. Now we’re all crying.

“Life is really short so let’s appreciate it and especially those who do good things. I’m really sad this morning. Rest well Christian Atsu,” he wrote.

The high hopes of many Ghanaians of the recovery of former ex-Black Stars player, Christian Atsu alive from the rubbles of the Türkiye earthquake which happened a fortnight ago, were dashed with news of his death on the morning of Saturday, February 18.

Atsu who played for Hatayspor before his tragic death was one of the star players from the Chelsea academy before heading to Türkiye.

Atsu had scored for Hatayspor Kulubu, their only goal in that game, the day before the disaster struck. The 31-year-old was residing in an apartment in the Hatay city which suffered huge damages during the quake.

Last Sunday night, Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkiye, Francisca Ashietey-Oduntun, and some family members of Atsu accompanied the mortal remains of the former Black Stars forward to Ghana as it emerged from the cargo section of the plane in a coffin wrapped in the national flag amid wailing by family members, friends and well-wishers to an emotional scene.

Government officials led by Vice- President Bawumia, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Evans Bobie Opoku were present.

Also present were some family members of Atsu and other well-wishers who converged on the tarmac and close to the entrance of the VIP Lounge to receive the body of Atsu aboard a Turkish airline
